Wolf Facial Expressions Prt 1 by Mongrelistic Wolf Facial Expressions Prt 1 by Mongrelistic
I seriously don't get how DA's new Category system works.

Some facail expressions I started a few days ago.. I know there's only 10 here- though I typed up a list of at least 40(I actually counted). I plan to work on more tonight/morrow.

I think I was able to nail the expressions correctly.. Anyway- in case you can't read my writing, from the left row, to the right row(top to bottom) the list is

Content
Alert
Cautious
Suspicious
Skeptic
Concerned
Disapointed
Shocked(like not scared, just more like a jaw-drop)
Happy
Apologetic

Be sure you look at them carefully. Just because they almost look alike- doesn't mean they are. ((Main areas are eyes, ears, lips))

Critics welcome. BUT BE NICE ABOUT IT. Also I realize my anatomy flops in a few places- like the skeptic wolf's ears are different sizes. I'm looking more for- are there ways to express the emotion/expression better?

If you're gonna make a comic you might as well make sure you can create different expressions right?

Part Two

Damn... Over a year old... I should make a new one. XD

My favorite is the concerned look, but I also like the disappointed one. I like the skeptic one too, especially for the eyes. The happy expression is cute too, I like how it's tongue is out, but maybe if the eyes were bigger it would look happier? I really don't know about that, but I always draw big eyes when happy and small eyes when depressed or concerned, but that's just me. In general I like them all, I like experimenting with new expressions, I think it gives my characters personality :D

Hehe thanks. Even though I drew this last year, it still seems to help people quite a bit.

I've been considering redo-ing both the expression sheets to fit my current style/skill.... I'll get around to it eventually, when I don't have homework/stuff to do. >w<

No problem. Well it really doesn't matters how old the piece is, an old piece is still useful no matter how old it is.

Redoing the expressions sheet is a great idea! I'd love to see them with your current style :D

They do suck though.

But the expressions are extremely awesome.
I need to work on mine more often.
My art is blah when it comes to the face.

Sweet job. Wolf expressions can be really hard to show, but I have to say you did a fairly great job with these. My favorite is apologetic, the way the ears are against the head, and the mouth is pulled back. I'm also going to do a wolf expression tutorial-like thing...but 40?! Good luck. lol I think you'll do good :D

I think they're very well done. Don't worry about differences between the wolves, you can tell it's the same character, so it doesn't matter. I will say that some of them look like they could use eyebrows. I think you nailed most of the facial expressions. Did you look in a mirror or did you do these by memory?
I especially like the suspicious one. His nose is scrunched just a tad too much, but I like how it's done, I wouldn't change it much. It looks kind of like he's smelled something he doesn't like (suspicion =P ) and the way his eyes are narrowed makes it work too. I like the dissapointed one too.

Don't take this last one as a critique, it's more of a joke. Your concerned one looks funny if you think it's expressing constipation. It's a good concerned look, too. I just laughed out loud when I thought of it and I thought I'd share my mirth =P
Anyway, very good job with all of it they all look great. I think you're ready to go straight into making the comic. If his body is as good as his head you've got it IMO.

Constipated..........?

XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Actually now that I look at the pic it DOES look like that!

I kinda wondered whether the suspicious one was too wrinkled or not... But at least I came close enough. Also I did these all from memory, no refs, no mirrors, no live dogs to look at(ect). I wondered if I should give them eyebrows... but I want to give them a more realistic look- at least with traits and such. Though wolves have brows, they don't show up like humans do(well duh).

I might try to practice making the muscles/fur more noticable. Or perhaps give them fur patterns similar to eyebrows. ... or something.

Anyway- thankyou very much for a worth while comment. It has helped me think things out a bit, better then just a "OMGAWDTHATISSOCOOL" thing...

Oh and I do have one page up already if you wanna look- it should be on my user page.

Lol, I'm trying to go for detailed comments, I'm trying to get my stuff looked at, and I read a good tutorial on how to leave detailed comments, so I try to follow it. =P You say detailed things you like/notice about the pic, then you say how it made you feel/what you thought of, etc., and then you critique it with things you notice, whether it's necessarily(sp?) right or not, it's what you thing so meh.

Anyway back to the topics, yeah you're right about the eyebrows on wolves, I've thought of the same thing myself. Even though they don't necessarily have eyebrows, I think they do have ridges above their eyes, like along the tops of the eye sockets that muscles move during various facial expressions, like humans do. If you want full facial details as in a character, you may have to deviate from the realistic to get the human element across. I like how you're wanting to show more wolf than human though, it does show in work. I'll ref. you to Faux Pas at [link] . They focus on the animal first and it shows. Ok, enough of that =P I'll have to look at your other stuff.

Oh yeah, that's awesome that you did all of these by memory. I think I'd have to look at a mirror to see what the face does =P
